Gukesh Dommaraju becomes the youngest chess world champion in December 2024 (Image source: EPA-EFE, Shutterstock)

At 18, Indian Gukesh Dommaraju Becomes the Youngest Chess World Champion ♟

Beating Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in their best-of-14 final in Singapore, Gukesh broke into tears in disbelief as he became the youngest-ever chess world champion. At age 18, he is four years younger than Garry Kasparov, the legendary Russian chess master who won his first world title in 1985. Social media showed fans in India celebrating Gukesh’s victory as he is the country’s second world champion after Viswanathan Anand.

Gukesh added in his press conference: “My journey, it’s been since the time I started playing chess at six-and-a-half, seven (years old). I’ve been dreaming about this moment for more than 10 years.”

India’s president, Draupadi Murmu, said Gukesh’s victory “stamps the authority of India as a chess powerhouse.” Meanwhile, Anand wrote on X, “Congratulations! It’s a proud moment for chess, a proud moment for India, a proud moment for WACA, and for me, a very personal moment of pride.”

“Death in Cambodia, Life in America”: Remembering the Past to Shape the Future ❤️‍🩹

Across the mighty Mekong River that traverses across six Asian countries, the Tonle Sap River (Cambodia) and Cá»u Long Delta (Vietnam) lay peacefully downstream. The river has been a silent companion, nourishing the crops and lives of the riverway residents there. But beneath the river’s halcyon days of the present lies one of the most barbaric phases in mankind's history—the Pol Pot regime.

A visit to the Killing Field or Toul Sleng Museum in Cambodia or Ba ChĂşc Crypt in a small border district of An Giang province (Vietnam) can leave one filled with dismay for the poor souls lost and revulsion for the hands that caused it. Many families affected are still in the healing process, as it has only been 45 years since the Cambodians made their way out of this regime.

“Death in Cambodia, Life in America” is a podcast co-created by Robert Chau, a genocide survivor, along with his daughter Dorothy Chow. It’s not simply just a podcast for casual interviews; Robert knew that only through stories, the Cambodians can be healed. This podcast is a return to the darkest time but an open floodgate for the survivors to release their trauma and remind young Cambodians to reflect on the past and head for a bright future.

Gin, Miyuki, and Hana (from left to right) in “Tokyo Godfathers” (Image Source: Kon’s Works)

Must-watch During Christmas Season: Tokyo Godfathers (2003) 🎄

Gin the middle-aged alcoholic, Hana the transwoman, and Miyuki the teenage runaway—all homeless—discover a newborn baby while searching for gifts in a trash dump, with hints of the baby's parents' identities. They embark on a missionary quest to look for the baby’s parents while dealing with their own struggles.

Directed by Satoshi Kon, the movie, filled with the chaos of Tokyo’s urban life and infused with the cozy atmosphere of Christmas, may offer you a new definition of “home” and the true meaning of “Christmas.”

There are many tropes to be made of Christmas: family, religion, or romance. One thing in common is that it’s all about deep connections. The concept of “chosen family,” family beyond biological ties, is no stranger to many, especially for the “outcast” or queer communities. The stories of the protagonists place the movie’s values up front, reinforcing the Christmas spirit—that at the end of the day, it’s a holiday for love and belonging.

It’s definitely a must-watch, taking you on a rollercoaster ride of thrills and tears.
