Carlos Yulo Bends and Breaks the Gender Stereotypes With His Gold Medals🏅

The recent victory of gold medalist Carlos Yulo at the Olympics has sparked conversations in the Philippines about gender stereotypes in sports. Traditionally, sports such as basketball are widely associated with masculinity, while gymnastics and acrobatics are considered more feminine.

Yulo’s achievement, along with female athlete Hidilyn Diaz’s gold medal in weightlifting, challenges these social norms, highlighting that sports should not be a gender issue. Critics argue that despite the progress, prejudice still runs deep, requiring broader social change to completely shatter these stereotypes.

Yulo’s win is seen as a stepping stone toward greater inclusivity within the Philippine sports sphere.

Reviving Khmer Heritage: Cambodia Hosts Traditional Martial Arts Award 🇰🇭

When “Year Zero” came into full force, the brutal Khmer Rouge did their best to make sure that all previous cultural traces were erased and a whole new regime was built from scratch. Years have passed, the repercussions still linger. Yet, now the Khmer people are hitting the ground running, progressing towards and seeing the day-by-day revival of what used to be theirs. 

This September, Cambodia will host “Hun Manet Traditional Khmer Martial Arts Award” to promote and preserve traditional martial arts, like Bokator, Kun Khmer and other near-extinct art forms. 

The competition, welcoming both local and international practitioners, wants to safeguard and elevate these art forms. This also opened doors for many Khmer martial artists who lacked the platform to showcase their talent in recent years.
