UPLIFTING STORY 📕

How Deena Kong Is Rewriting Representation in Children’s Literature

Growing up Cambodian in North America, Deena Kong often felt invisible—a feeling that followed her from Canada to the U.S. and ultimately inspired her to write Grateful Being Me, a book to help children understand the importance of representation.

“Representation matters,” Deena explains. “When a child wanders through a library or bookstore, they should be able to find themselves in the stories and pictures. I hope Grateful Being Me encourages self-acceptance, celebrates diversity, and promotes inclusion by empowering children to connect with one another.”

Labubu Dolls: The Collectible Obsession Sweeping Fans Worldwide 🩷

At 4:45 a.m. on Friday, a long line formed outside Pop Mart’s Los Angeles store, with eager customers, some arriving as early as 10 p.m. the night before, waiting for the latest series of Labubu dolls. These collectible, mischievous Nordic elves, created by artist Kasing Lung, have become part of a larger trend of iconic Asian characters like Hello Kitty.

Since partnering with Pop Mart in 2019, Labubu dolls have sold out within minutes, sparking dedicated fan communities both online and offline. Despite their playful, troublemaking nature, Labubu dolls have become sought-after fashion accessories, often paired with luxury handbags.

Tiger Balm Battles Rising Tariffs Amid U.S.-China Trade Tensions 🐯

Tiger Balm, the popular “miracle” for muscle aches and any ailments in the world (according to Asian parents), now meets significant challenges due to the intense ongoing U.S.-China trade war. Manufactured in China and distributed in the U.S. by Prince of Peace Enterprises, the product is now hit by rising tariffs, which could cost the distributor up to $5 million this year.

The dilemma now is whether to raise prices, and while the answer may not be immediate, it's likely in the near future. Tariffs mainly impact specialty goods like Tiger Balm, which have limited Western alternatives. Chinatowns in the US are also facing narrow profit margins, but there’s hope that the community will persevere, as it did in 2018.
