UPLIFTING STORY 📕

Eunice Chen, the animation artist and illustrator behind Táng, brings her childhood memories of Taiwanese night markets to life through the art of sugar painting.

After transitioning from her career as a teacher to an animation artist and illustrator, the talented Eunice Chen once again decided to test her abilities by creating an animated short film project called Táng (糖).

Táng is a movie about one of those by-chance encounters that integrates the art of 糖画 (tánghuà). Through the lens of tánghuà – a traditional Chinese sugar-painting art, this unexpected relationship arrives and flourishes into a confounding yet paramount work of fatherhood, family, and fate.

A Poetry Initiative That Unites a Divided Community

In 2017, Nikhil Mandalaparthy came across a poem on Lord Krishna in Hinduism—written by a Muslim poet, Hafeez Jalandhari—that completely altered his perspectives on religions and cultures. This miraculous encounter has paved the way for his cross-religious work journey, leading to the birth of ‘Voices of Bhakti,’ a digital archive honoring South Asian poetry on the diversity in India.

In 2024, along with Dr. Preethi Ramaprasad, he launched the ‘Sacred Journey Fellowship’ in the Bay Area, gathering six South Asian artists in the U.S. with different origins.

Each created original works inspired by poems from the archive, using art to bridge religious and caste divides. Their pieces, shared widely online, aim to raise conversations and encourage unity within the South Asian community that is on the verge of rampant division.

Hawaii Currently Imports 90% of Its Food Supply, but Local Farmers Working to Reduce This Dependency Are Now Facing Significant Budget Reductions. 👨‍🌾

The Trump administration’s freeze on Inflation Reduction Act and USDA program funds has slashed nearly $90 million in support for Hawaii and Pacific-region farms. Local farmers—already struggling to keep prices low—are now fighting to survive.

“Trying to grow these Indigenous crop systems, and trying to get everybody back to Native foods, it’s an uphill battle,” said Makua, owner of the Aloha ʻĀina Poi Company. With livelihoods at stake, Hawaiian agricultural leaders are in Washington, D.C., pressing the USDA for answers: funding, resources, or at least clarity. But they know the odds are steep.
