Sophia Yen is a doctor from the Bay Area, with a desire to support and streamline women’s access to birth control. Her initiative, Pandia Health, materialized that dream of hers by offering a customized, one-stop solution for common women's issues, including birth control, acne, and menopause.

Beyond her organization, she also views fashion as a platform to affirm her advocacy for female empowerment. Whether it is a condom-made bag or a uterus-shaped necklace, she wants to challenge taboos and raise discussions about reproductive health, especially for women. 

Pack Your Bags! North Korea Gears Up for a 2024 Tourism Comeback✈️

North Korea is planning to re-open controlled international tourism by December 2024, after years of closing the borders due to COVID-19. 

Travel agencies like Beijing-based Koryo Tours or Shenyang’s KTG Tours have announced that visitors are now granted permission to travel to Samjiyŏn, near Mount Paektu, which holds historical significance to North Korea. 

Detailed protocols on tourism expansion, including possible access to visit Pyongyang and other areas, will be announced soon. Although North Korean state media have not officially confirmed these plans, Kim Jong Un’s recent activities and a focus on tourism from "friendly" nations like China and Russia show the potential for a cautious resumption.

Typhoon Ampil’s U-Turn: Japan’s Miracle Escape and the Heatwave Ahead🌈

Japan has witnessed a miracle now that Typhoon Ampil, after causing quite a 'storm' in Japanese news for potential damages, has changed its mind and moved back to where it belonged—in this case, the ocean, specifically the Pacific Ocean. 

The typhoon, with wind velocity at around 100 MPH, caused traffic disruptions during the Obon festival, causing thousands to be stuck when bullet trains between Tokyo and Nagoya were canceled. 

Electricity outages have also affected over 5,000 households but the majority has been restored. The evacuation order for 320,000 citizens at Iwaki City, Fukushima was also taken down, and Disneyland Tokyo has resumed normal operation. 

But after the storm comes… the heat. Forecasters now warn of extreme heat, with temperatures expected to reach 38°C (100°F) in the Tokyo area. Let’s hope for the best to come for the people in Japan!

The Thin Line Between Love and Critique: Navigating the Body Image Stress of East Asian Women♀️

From “Why are you so thin? Eat more!” to “Are you fatter these days?” in a nanosecond, there’s nothing that can spin an Asian woman faster than her family members. 

A research published on PLOS ONE has uncovered the stress that Chinese and white Western women have to face regarding body image. The results show that even though Nigerian black women prefer bigger bodies, Chinese and white women are under more pressure to maintain their thinness. 

While East Asian women are negatively affected by family members, especially during family mealtimes or gatherings, it is social media that has a noticeable impact on their white counterparts. 

Interestingly enough, despite much pressure from their family, East Asian American women are more satisfied with their bodies compared to their white peers. Yet, the pressure to be thin will remain many Asians’ lifelong concerns as it has been intergenerationalized within their families and communities while more white women move out of that concern with age.
