Recent Tourist Restrictions in Japan: How Long Can Japanese Hospitality Be Challenged? 🗻

Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, is now placing restrictions on customer visits on certain hiking trails, citing concerns over hiker safety and environmental damage. Moreover, in response to tourists’ frequent indecent behaviors, a nearby resort town Fujikawaguchiko, Internet famous for its Lawson's store in front of Mount Fuji, is installing a barrier to block the view.

Some of Kyoto’s famous geisha neighborhoods have also officially banned foreigners' entry due to the ‘Geisha’ paparazzi phenomenon with many reports of nuisance behaviors from tourists towards Geisha, traditional Japanese female entertainers skilled in various art forms.

When Japan's tourism reopened post-Covid, a remarkable six-fold increase in foreign arrivals during 2023 compared to 2022 was supposed to be a good sign for the country. However, Japan is now struggling to implement policies that tackle the consequences of overtourism. This poses a question about the balance between economic benefits and cultural preservation in Japan. Moreover, to the tourists, it is a never-ending reminder of basic etiquette of respect and decency.
