It is quite common in the Lunar New Year to see candy boxes. Each box has eight compartments, a number considered lucky, and is arranged in an octagonal shape to reflect themes of completeness and unity. Sweets arranged inside can vary based on the household's wishes for the year, ranging from wealth and prestige to longevity and vitality.

But do you know what is also divided into sections with different and delicious sweets for you to taste? It’s this newsletter with an assortment of community news and insight for you to dive into!

WEEKLY FAVORITES

In this series, AHN will share our top picks from last week—whether it’s music, a movie, or a random item. We hope it brings you fun and maybe even some new experiences!

Orlando in Love - Japanese Breakfast 💖

Japanese Breakfast’s lead single from their upcoming album is similar to the story of “The Little Mermaid’ but this time, Prince Eric is a simp for the troubled dead inside girlies. Hallucinated by his idealized vision of love, he watches as his dream girl (in this song—a siren) emerges onto land, comes to him like a savior, and leaves him emotionally capsized (in other words—“he got played”).

With brooding chordophone streams, the song creates a melancholic soundscape that pulls listeners into a trance, much like how the siren lures the protagonist. Inspired by Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato, it serves as a warning: don’t mess with mermaids or the girlies who listen to Japanese Breakfast, Mazzy Star, and watch ‘The Virgin Suicides’ religiously.

Us and Them (2018) 💭

Hope core is in its full bloom (for Lunar New Year) but so is nostalgia. The 2003 Chinese movie Us and Them will surely take you down memory lane. If you’re “chronically online” enough, you’ve probably seen the tear-jerking trends on TikTok featuring childhood photos and past experiences, along with the line “Anyway, don’t be a stranger” from Phoebe Bridgers’ song Scott Street. Yes—the entire movie could be summed up with that line.

It’s the story of two strangers, united by fate, separated by fate, and then reunited by fate—only to discover that everything has changed. With black-and-white scenes depicting the present and colored ones for their past encounters, the movie is a poignant reality of lost loves and faded dreams.

So, if you’re after a “healing” and “joyful” movie for Lunar New Year, look no further than this!

TikTok, RedNote, and the Unfulfilled Potential of the Chinese Internet 🌐

A mass exodus is happening and some of us have already unconsciously taken part in it. And what is the cost for these refugees? Cat videos and photos. Indeed, we are talking about RedNote.

The Chinese social media app RedNote has received 500,000 American users in the last week as a protest to the TikTok ban. Calling themselves “TikTok refugees”, they heartwarmingly share and respond to Chinese users' questions and in return, these “locals” welcome them to their new haven. Some would call this act espionage and spy work; users call it making friends.

RedNote offers a fascinating take on modern society's core desire: connection. In the past, Chinese internet giants like Alibaba, Didi, and WeChat dominated the global tech scene. Today, only Tencent remains, as global attention has shifted to view China more as a technological and geopolitical threat. Regardless of the truth behind privacy concerns, RedNote underscores the undeniable human need to connect. Only time will reveal if this fundamental drive for connection can surpass political and regulatory barriers.

"I Have a Dream" – Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s Legacy of Inspiration for Asian Americans 👑

This Monday, January 20th, marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day—a day to honor the influential Black activist who has inspired waves of activism, not only to the Black communities but also other marginalized groups, including Asian Americans.

King’s leadership in civil rights has redefined immigration laws, voting rights, and interracial marriage, all of which have made a significant impact on Asian Americans. His anti-imperialist stance and criticism of U.S. foreign policy have resonated with Asian Americans, connecting their migration histories with global struggles against imperialism.

King’s ethical goals continue to shine through, especially through his vision of building a “beloved community”—a communitya community driven by love, justice, and peace. His legacy has found its way to inspire Asian Americans to challenge systemic racism and build coalitions to stand for justice and equality.
