Did you know that Asian countries have their own way of celebrating Thanksgiving? Chuseok, a Korean festival similar to Thanksgiving, celebrates the harvest with a more spiritual meaning, such as expressing gratitude to ancestors, taking place in September and October. In Japan, they celebrate Kinrōkansha no Hi, otherwise known as Labor Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on November 23rd. 

This week, let’s look back on all the things we are grateful for, starting with inspiring stories, community milestones, and other moments that have uplifted us throughout this year.

Swapping Banchan for Your Typical Thanksgiving Sides, Caroline Choe Is Making Kimchi Mac and Cheese 🧀

Caroline Choe is a Korean American chef and the author of a new cookbook titled “Banchan: 60 Korean American Recipes for Delicious, Shareable Sides,” aimed at bringing Korean flavors to your typical Thanksgiving meal. Moving to New York in 1973, her family wanted turkey on Thanksgiving but did not know how to cook it.

They gradually learned to do a Thanksgiving feast fused with a Korean twist. Two of Choe’s dishes that are her parents’ favorites are kimchi mashed potatoes and kimchi mac and cheese. Choe jokingly says, “I served this at an event, and it was just gone in the blink of an eye.” The cookbook offers readers traditional banchan recipes straight from Choe’s family members, along with several of her unique inventions, giving your Thanksgiving feast a new experience and a touch of Korean flavor.

The Remarkable Story Behind VIZIO Founder William Wang’s Lifetime Achievement Award 📺

This October, William Wang was honored with Lifetime Achievement at the 75th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards. As the founder of VIZIO, Wang has revolutionized the television industry, shattering the cost-related concerns about whether quality and pricing can go hand in hand. From a Taiwanese immigrant to a trailblazer, his journey is one of innovation and persistence.

After graduation, Wang was on his way to materializing his dream: starting a company in the tech industry. Yet, he failed multiple times, draining his resources and budget. However, each failure gave him the opportunities and lessons to grow his entrepreneurial endeavors.

But life comes with unheralded events. In 2000, the Singapore Airlines Flight 006 that he was on encountered a crash, and he was one of the few survivors of that fatal incident.

This disastrous event completely altered his outlook on life: he became more grateful for his relationships and the comfort they provide, such as families spending cozy time together watching TV. This newfound perspective catalyzed his entrepreneurial shift into his next venture, fostering an idea that would transform the consumer electronics market. He envisioned a future where the gap between top-tier technology and affordability disappeared—a vision that soon became VIZIO. In 2002, he launched VIZIO.

“Moana 2” Breaks New Ground with Māori-Language Release 🏝️

“Moana 2” is making history with the launch of the Māori-language version, “Moana 2 Reo Māori,” alongside the English version. This is the first Disney animated movie to ever do this!

The Māori version will be aired in New Zealand, with voice actors speaking te reo Māori. Director Tweedie Waititi, a proud Māori from Tairāwhiti, made sure the haka was included because what’s a sea excursion without the powerful haka dance? This release is a big step for Māori language revival, following efforts that began with a petition back in 1972. Disney teamed up with New Zealand’s Matewa Media for the project.
