When a Chinese Goddess Girlbossed and Gatekept Communities for Centuries ⛵
It’s International Women’s Day, and also the time to celebrate the badass women around us… and even above us! In China, there’s a saying that goes, “There are gods three feet above your head.” To many Chinese, especially in the diaspora Chinese communities, Mazu—also known as Tianhou and Tianfei—is a highly revered sea goddess who is believed to be the protector of seafarers and sailors. In southeastern China, police stations have found the ultimate girlboss method for conflict resolution: Mother Mazu. Since 2019, over 10 police stations in Fujian have set up mediation rooms in her honor, and well, no one dares to lie when they know Mazu is literally watching!
Mazu, once a mortal with weather-predicting superpowers, is now a global icon for protection and blessings. This International Women’s Day, let’s honor the legendary goddess who’s been safeguarding communities for over 1,000 years. Cheers to the power of women, both divine and earthly!

Organizations and communities play a pivotal role in uplifting, connecting, and empowering South Asian American entrepreneurs, leaders, and culture-makers.
