Now, with the Gregorian calendar, the date has become the worldwide standard for New Year’s Day, with the Pacific Island nation of Kiribati being the first to celebrate New Year and American Samoa being the last.

South Korea Becomes ‘Super-Aged’ Society, New Data Shows 🇰🇷

As the New Year begins, South Korea has officially entered the ranks of ‘super-aged’ societies, with over 10.24 million people—20% of the population—aged 65 or older, reports CNN. The official data underscores the nation’s ongoing population crisis, as classified by the United Nations.

South Korea has been grappling with low birth rates, dropping to the world's lowest rate of just 0.72 in 2023 after several years of decline. Authorities are desperately trying to reverse such a dire situation, with President Yoon Suk Yeol calling parliament to establish a new ministry to address what he calls a “national emergency.” Initiatives such as extending maternity leave, social campaigns encouraging men to assist in housework and childcare, and offering “baby vouchers” to new parents have failed. As monetary solutions prove insufficient, only time will tell how this crisis can be solved.
