Meet the ‘Daechi Mom,’ Korea’s Version of the Tiger Mom 🐯

While many of you are familiar with Steven He’s dad, get ready to meet the ‘Daechi Mom.’ In Korea, the ‘Daechi Mom’ is portrayed as a hyper-focused, education-obsessed figure, essentially a suped-up Tiger Mom. Recently, comedian Lee Su-ji parodied this archetype on her YouTube channel Hot Issue Ji, sparking a cultural firestorm.

Viewers flooded the comments with empathy and encouragement, highlighting how the Daechi Mom resonates deeply with many. The rise of parodies like the Tiger Mom or Asian Dad reveals a shared thread in Asian childhood experiences.

Jung Duk-hyun, a cultural critic, explains the intense reaction: “The widespread response stems from a mix of envy toward the Daechi Mom, despair over not being able to provide the same opportunities, and a growing awareness of the flaws in Korea’s education system.”

Sharul Channa Proves Women in Comedy Are No Joke 🃏

“Women aren’t funny” is an age-old stereotype that has reduced women to nothing but an inanimate object. Sharul Channa, Singapore’s only full-time female stand-up comedian, has worked hard to prove herself in a male-dominated industry.

So obviously, she faced quite a few (we mean, a lot) struggles early in her career, trying to get that stage time. However, her strong writing, also encouraged by local comedy legend Kumar, built a successful career, performing internationally in India, Australia, and beyond.
