Goodbye TikTok, Hello Xiaohongshu: The Unexpected Social Media Migration 🧧

Although TikTok has not yet been banned in the U.S. and its future here remains uncertain, many Americans are already in their “grieving and leaving” stage. Trends like “Goodbye, my Chinese spy” are further proof of Gen Z’s unserious and lighthearted approach to such a controversial issue and their emotional attachment to this app.

However, could this be the case of “a taste of your own medicine,” where, as the U.S. government attempts to ban TikTok, a surge of U.S. users is migrating to Xiaohongshu, or “RedNote,” China’s biggest social media? Well, Xiaohongsu has already topped App Store Downloads in the States, along with Lemon8, another ByteDance app.

The initial signs of bilateral relationships among social media users have shown positive signs, with Americans advocating for respectful interactions and Chinese users welcoming them and offering tutorials. Amidst the not-very-subtle beef between these two “frenemies,” to citizens, it’s all about love, peace, and vibes.

Hong Kong Sets the Stage for a Concert Economy Boom 🎆

Taylor Swift’s The Eras tour has shocked the world and become a new epitome of “concert economy.” And Hong Kong is no exception.

Since March 2024, Hong Kong's tourism board has launched a dedicated division to support mega-events by assisting with venue searches, event planning, and promotions. The upcoming Kai Tak Sports Park, set to open in early 2025, will further boost the city’s concert scene with its 50,000-seat stadium and other state-of-the-art facilities. Events already scheduled include performances by Coldplay in April and Jay Chou in June, positioning Hong Kong as a hub for large-scale pop culture events.

The government is also exploring measures to combat ticket scalping, including potential legislation. While no scalping-related convictions have occurred since 2022, authorities remain cautious, balancing regulatory impacts and market dynamics to protect event integrity.

Hindu Pilgrims converging for the Maha Kumbh Mela (Image Source: Agence France-Presse, Getty Images)

India Is Ready for the World’s Largest Human Gathering 🇼🇳

An estimated 400 million Hindu pilgrims from all over the world are converging at the Ganges to bathe—the act is the religion’s biggest display of unity. Maha Kumbh Mela, or “great festival of the sacred pitcher,” is the world’s largest religious ceremony. The holy path is a custom for believers to purify their sins, preceded by people dancing and singing.

The religious festival happens every 12 years on the banks of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers in the northern Indian city of Prayagra. According to government statistics, the previous one in 2013 drew 120 million people. This year, government officials state the festival can host 300 to 400 million people.

Government officials will have to manage logistics for the festival. The state has constructed campsites across the 10,000-acre area with proper infrastructure and security cameras. The preparation is believed to be the most expensive Maha Kumbh Mela ever, costing about $800 million to prevent stampedes and disease outbreaks. On the bright side, the festival is expected to yield billions of dollars in revenue for the nation and a chance for pilgrims to pray for health, happiness, and prosperity.
