Great North American Eclipse: A Celestial Fantasy 🌒

On April 8th, 2024, North America witnessed a spectacular sight - the Great North American Eclipse. This total solar eclipse cast a path of totality across parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada. During totality, the Moon completely blocked the Sun, creating a breathtaking daytime darkness.

The eclipse garnered significant interest, with many traveling to the path of totality to experience this rare phenomenon. The longest duration of totality lasted an impressive 4 minutes and 28 seconds. While a total eclipse was only visible from a specific region, a partial eclipse was observable across most of North America.

Did you also know that you can't look directly at a solar eclipse: the Sun's rays are intense even during an eclipse, and looking directly at it can cause permanent eye damage. Special filters are required to view a solar eclipse safely.

Filipino American Harvard Fencer Parries His Way to Paris 2024 Olympics 🤺

Mitchell Saron, a Filipino American Harvard University student, expressed immense joy upon realizing his childhood dream of competing at the Olympics. 

Selected for Team USA’s fencing lineup, Saron, 23, will compete in Men’s Saber at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, both individually and in teams. His qualification followed Team USA's silver at the Padua World Cup and gold at the Men’s Saber World Cup. 

Saron attributed his success to early-season performance and lifestyle changes, including abstaining from alcohol and adopting a specific diet. Proud of his Filipino heritage, he draws inspiration from his great-grandfather, a swordsman in the Philippines with an aim to celebrate and maintain his family's legacy.

Fencing in the Philippines dates back to the mid-19th century when the Spanish colonizers introduced the practice of amateur swordsmanship. During this period, many Filipino revolutionaries, including notable figures like Jose Rizal, Juan Luna, and Antonio Luna, were known to have taken up fencing. These individuals embraced the sport, which became an integral part of their lives during the Spanish colonial era.

Thailand and China Over the Moon about Their Joint Lunar Mission 🌙

China and Thailand have signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to collaborate on space exploration, including the International Lunar Research Station. 

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) and Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation inked the agreements. Thailand will contribute a space weather monitoring device for China's Chang'e-7 lunar mission in 2026. Additionally, Thailand aims to send robots and scientific payloads onboard China's Chang'e-8 mission in 2028. 

China's lunar exploration programs focus on building the International Lunar Research Station. Both countries will work together on joint space projects, scientific exchanges, personnel training, and data sharing. 

They welcome other nations, organizations, and entities to join the International Lunar Research Station program for collaborative space exploration. China has already signed cooperation agreements with over 10 countries and organizations and invites further participation in constructing lunar research facilities.
