How to End the Year Mindfully and Start the New One with the 1% Kaizen Rule
As the year slows down and the holidays settle in, it’s natural to start thinking about the shift back into work and routine. Moving from rest and reflection to full focus can feel uncomfortable, especially when we expect ourselves to reset everything at once. This is a good time to turn to the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen (改善), which means “continuous improvement.”
Kaizen teaches us that meaningful progress doesn’t come from big, dramatic changes. It comes from small, steady improvements that are easier to maintain. This approach makes growth feel lighter, more manageable, and more likely to last.
To use Kaizen as you close the year and prepare for the next:
Keep changes small: Choose one tiny action each day, like clearing your inbox for 15 minutes or writing a few lines of a task you’ve been avoiding. Small wins help you stay consistent.
Build on what already works: Look at your current routines and ask, “How can this be 1% better?” Simple adjustments, such as a quick meeting recap or a smoother workflow, add up over time.
Focus on preparation: Set yourself up for success by making things easier in advance. Laying out materials the night before or blocking quiet time in the morning can help you stay focused.
By following the Kaizen approach, you can close the year with intention and step into the next one at a steady pace. Small daily improvements build momentum that carries you well beyond the first weeks of January.
